===============
Introduction
===============

My son Rufus had his first Judo competition
this past Saturday on the January 15, 2011.
On Friday night I was getting somewhat concerned.

Here's what made me nervous.

He was whining about how he did not want to
fight on Saturday and I am so concerned about
not forcing him into the sport of Judo that I told
my wife, "Hey, if he doesn't want to fight, I don't
think we should force him to fight."

My wife looked at me and said, "No. We came
here and he's going to fight, because in his
life there will be plenty of things that he doesn't
feel like doing that he's going to have to do!"

Whoa!!!!!

====================
The "Real Dr. Ferguson" had
just sprayed me with some
CHUMP REPELLENT!!
====================

Rufus was having a Chump Moment and then
the spirit of THE CHUMP jumped on me and
I started to have one and my wife straightened
me right out!!

I got silent and then said, "Honey, you're right!"

And boy was she ever right.

=====================
The Day Of The Competition
=====================

On the day of the competition, we took 2 cars.
My mother-in-law, my wife and lil Rhadi were in
one car and Rufus and I in the other.

On the way to the tournament, Rufus
says, "Daddy, I'm going to beat them
down."

LOL

I was laughing on the inside because the lil
fella reminds me of myself.

When we get to the tournament site and
start walking in the parking lot, little Rufus
says, "Daddy I'm gonna take them down and
then I'ma choke them."

At which point, I say, "Hey, hey, hey. You can't
choke at your age. No choking!"

Which he clearly doesn't understand because people
his age in Jiujitsu learn how to choke and armbar,
but that's another discussion :-/

So...... we get to the venue and Rufus has one
person in his weight class. So it's a true double
elimination tournament.

Rufus will fight either 2 or 3 times.

This is GOOD for his first tournament. I don't want
the lil' guy to get overwhelmed.

During the day, I stay quiet. I allow his coach to
do the coaching. I DO NOT INTERFERE.

===================
PAUSE FOR A SLIGHT
RANT
===================

Because as a coach I know that there is NOTHING
WORSE THAN A PARENT WHO THINKS THAT THEY
KNOW MORE THAN YOU DO AND IS CONTSTANTLY
CHIRPING IN THEIR CHILD'S EAR about what it is that
they think you are doing wrong, what it is that they think
you don't understand, or what it is that you don't realize,
and what it is that they think you are missing.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY FRUSTRATING AND PISSES ME
OFF as it does MOST coaches. And I don't want to
treat someone else like that.

Side note: If that is HOW you feel about the person
coaching your child - LEAVE!!!!! Coach your kid yourself.

You ARE not helping the process by constantly interjecting.

SHUT THE ------- UP AND LET THE COACH - COACH!
OR GO!!!

Okay.... I've made my peace.

==================
Back to the Story LOL
==================

So I stay out of the way and I just do the daddy thing
and I'm loving it. I just offer encouragement and
take pictures and video.

Rufus warms up with his team and his coach.

Rufus gets ready to compete.

They call Rufus to the line and I'm GETTING nervous.

It's weird. I don't get nervous walking into the cage to
put my life on the line, but I'm nervous when my son
is fighting. LOL.

And then my man Rufus does what he does best.

I'd love to explain it to you but I think it's best that you
watch the video. :-)

Congratulations To Rufus!!
===================

Rufus Ferguson is the 2011 Florida Judo Open State
Championships CHAMPION in the 23kg Division.

I've never had this feeling before. People were coming
up to me and congratulating me and I was beaming
with pride.

Hmmmm. I wonder what it must feel like to have your
kid graduate from college? Wow! That must be something.

Well, it was a great weekend. I'm very appreciative to
Sensei Diaz of Mambi Judo Club in Tampa, Florida.

I'm super appreciative to my Mother-in-Law Sheila T. who
takes Rufus to Judo practice 99% of the time because
Traci is working and I'm training.

I'm just really thankful.

I can't wait until Lil Rhadi Isabelle gets out there.
